Student portrait Jumana Issa
Tired of carrying out other people’s assignments, graphic designer Jumana Issa applied for portfolio admission to film studies at ZHdK and is now telling her own stories.
BY ANDREA ZELLER
Andrea Zeller: Why did you decide to study film?
Jumana Issa: Filmmaking has always interested me, and after a few years as a graphic artist in the advertising industry I felt the urge to try something new. I’d had enough of telling other people’s stories. I first thought I could manage without professional training. But I soon realised that I lacked too many basics, especially technical ones.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I try to watch movies every free minute. I admire the work of Canadian director Xavier Dolan. He has no classical film education, and his formal language and his worldview are very unconventional.
